Help with my low level mesmer.
So heres the background.
I started playing factions and created a ranger, a lot of fun and a lot of versatility. However i couldnt help but think i was missing out not having Prophicies, after reading several threads on here. So i went out and bought the game and after much deliberation i decided to creat a Mesmer.
Now heres where the advice of all the expert Mesmers on the forums could help me out.
I recently finished the Nolani Academy mission, and as we did 2 of the people in my group were calling me a noob and a spammer, as to cause damage to the enemy i was using conjure phantasm, backfire and empathy. I had energy tap on me incase i needed a quick refil to finish off an enemy, as well as orison of healing/symbol of wrath/ressurect (monk second). There reason for calling me a noob was because i was spamming CP Emp and Back.
Longwinded but ill get there.
What i am asking is what sort of build would/did you use at my level? What skills would you use (please note i am only up to Borlis pass). My attributes are currently:
Fast Casting: 5 (3+1+1)
Illusion: 4 (3+1)
Domination: 9 (8+1)
Inspiration: 3 (2+1)
Healing Prayers: 2
And ive got domination and illusion weapons which are:
Any advice any one could give would be appreciated.

Conjure, empathy and backfire are all fully viable spells at that area. Conjure loses its power around... later Kryta, but picks up again when combined with IoR and recovery/persistance (that's another story though).
Empathy is god, you will not doubt the Empathy. It is solid PvE anti-attacker domination. Backfire isn't that great early on, cause it gives a harsh energy to damage ratio at lower dom levels. However it will be handy against monks coming up in the ice areas.
Skills to get : Power spike, from the summit champion quest in yak's bend. Hmm, a defensive stance, distortion is king, followed by phy res or mantra of frost in borlis area.
eTap is weak but you don't have anyting better right now, drop orison and symbol for more mesmer skillls. Ideally pure mesmer is strong, since nothing monkish really complements it that much. Use ether feast to selfheal, and don't bring enchantments because summit sages shatter.

Just as a tip - for spamming do you mean recasting as soon as you have energy?
Or casting on top one anohter like a nuke - these are Hex duration putting empathy on empathy before the first empathy has worn off (same target) is a waste of energy.

No, what i meant was, as soon as CP ran out, id recast it, likewise with empathy (though they usually died before i had to recast this on one enemy).
Its just like my ranger, i wouldnt recast kindle arrows until it had run out.
Also, id cycle targets and stick CP on them while empathy was recharging.

They were probably just upset that you were killing foes before they could.
As long as you're not constantly throwing hexes on foes while previous ones are still active, being selective with your casting - that is, not casting both Empathy and Backfire on both melee and caster foes, then I can't see what you're doing wrong to deserve name calling.
For most of my mesmer life, I've been primarily Domination. Empathy and Backfire were, and still are, my staple skills. Prior to hitting level 20, and doing the 2 attribute quests, I focused on Domination only. You need points in Fast Casting and Inspiration, and I found that I was spread to thinly if I threw points into Illusion as well. I dropped Illusion altogether and increased Domination to get the best out of that line.
Cycling through foes and attacking foes that the team are working on is what I do too. I soften them up and make them easier for the team to take down.
I can't remember what skills are available to you at that stage of the game, but get some interrupts. And don't interrupt a spell caster that you have Backfired as it a waste.

Well, the only thing I can really say is that your attributes are spread out too much. I'd only put points in max 4 attributes, keep to 3 if you can. Also, the spells you have been using are fine.
For everything else, just ask Avarre. She knows lots about mesmers. I don't. Please listen to her for your sake.

Avarre is a he the last time I checked...
Manage your attributes
Do not tank
If something starts bashing on you make their life hell (if this means kiting do it, running behind a tree so the arrows dont hit do it, etc.)
There are other great mesmers on this board, some I respect some I do not(XD). The great thing about mesmers is that there really is no "best choice" as the other classes have it. We have a few staples (shatter hex, cry of frustration) but other than those we are pretty much free to do what we want.
Because of that; we get into a load of agruements.

Backfire is good where you are. Ice Golems, Stone Summits and those monk creatures that come out of the ground, suffer from that spell. Empathy is okay, and if that's the only anti-warrior spell you have, then keep it. Otherwise, go with spirit of failure. Why Spirit of Failure? Because it reduces the chance of anyone attacking you (with no spells) by 25%. Each miss gives you energy. Power leak or Power spike is good vs spell casters as well. Other good spells are Conjure Phantasm (Avarre is correct in its effectiveness in later parts of the game), Phantom Pain + Shatter Hex, and power drain.
If you had high power Illusion & Inspiration, then Distortion and Spirit of Failure will help you immensly.
Mesmers are more for support than pure killing. The more you can reduce the effectiveness of enemy spellcasters, the more your party will appreciate you.

Drop: Symbol of Wrath, Orison of Healing.
Take: Power Spike, Distortion.
You're fine.
I just said what Avarre said, actually, but with less words.

Cheers guys, thats just what im looking for. Ive dropped healing prayer attrib's now as well as most of my illusion att's. Im stacked with 7 mes skills (backfire, empathy, cp, distortion, power spike, ether fest and energy tap) and 1 monk (resurrect).
Did well on the borlis pass quest, didnt die and having resurrect with me helped for those that did. I just stood at the back of the group with the monk, casting empathy and backfire mainly, and using power spike when possible.

Level 15 now, and loving every minute of being a Mesmer
Took your advice and stuck to using only 3 attributes. Ive got 10 domination - 8 inspiration - 7 fast casting.
What im wondering now is what skill is better than eTap. It doesnt really cut the mustard in the heat of the battle, costing me 5 and only replenishing 12. Im up to the mission in the wilds.
Cheers

Doesn't remember the skills in jungle but I know Power Drain is one the best to get energy (and sometime too much). I think Drain enchantment is another good energy management too.

Power Drain owns. Hexes can be left for Shatter Hex.
